Denver Nursing Home Abuse Investigation Lawyer
As an attorney devoted to the rights of the elderly, I have extensive experience in identifying nursing home abuse and neglect. Some signs of neglect and abuse are clear cut-a patient who suffers a bedsore that is open to the bone as a result of dehydration or a patient who is dropped and breaks a hip while being transferred to a wheelchair is the victim of negligence.
Red flags suggesting nursing home abuse or neglect
More subtle signs of nursing home abuse or neglect should not be overlooked. At a minimum an elder abuse attorney should conduct a case review and possible full investigation if the following are observed:
- A nursing home resident or elderly person is not given the opportunity to speak outside of the presence of the caregiver.
- A family member goes to the victim's residence and observes hostility on the part of the caregiver.
- A visitor observes that a nursing home resident appears to be drugged into a stupor.
- A senior citizen has bruises and discoloration, welts, open wounds, cuts, or burns that suggest being slapped, pushed, or punished, all forms of physical abuse.
- Signs of long-term care negligence, such as bedsores (often a sign of dehydration), weight loss, malnutrition, or poor hygiene suggest the resident is not receiving appropriate care.
- The elderly person appears apprehensive when a nurse or aide approaches, or appears to be afraid to speak freely about care-signs of emotional, sexual, or verbal abuse.
- The patient appears to spend long periods left in bed or a wheelchair without appropriate activities.
- Depression (this is not normal, and often goes untreated in the elderly.)
